What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty — commonly called a nose job — is one of the most technically demanding procedures in facial plastic surgery. It reshapes the underlying bone and cartilage of the nose to achieve better facial harmony.
Patients choose rhinoplasty for many reasons: to reduce a dorsal hump, refine a bulbous tip, narrow wide nostrils, correct asymmetry after injury, or improve breathing affected by a deviated septum.
When aesthetic and functional concerns are addressed in the same operation, this is called a septorhinoplasty. Medicare may provide a partial rebate for the functional component.

All incisions are made entirely inside the nostrils. No visible external scarring, less swelling, and a slightly shorter recovery.

Consultation and planning

Pre-operative preparation
Avoid blood-thinning medications for two weeks prior. Fast from midnight the night before. Arrange a driver and support person for the first night home.

General anaesthesia
Administered by an accredited anaesthetist. You will be completely asleep throughout the 2–4 hour procedure.

Reshaping cartilage and bone
Skin is carefully lifted, then the surgeon reshapes the underlying structures — reducing, repositioning, or adding tissue — to achieve your planned result.

Closure and splinting
Incisions are closed with fine sutures. A lightweight external splint supports the nose during initial healing. Internal packing is rarely needed with modern techniques.

Recovery and follow-up

What to expect after surgery
Most many patients find by how manageable rhinoplasty recovery is. Here is a realistic week-by-week guide.
Days 1 – 3
Rest and elevation
Swelling and bruising peak in the first 48 hours. Rest with your head elevated, apply cold compresses gently, and take prescribed pain relief as needed.
Week 1 – 2
Splint removal and return to desk work
The external splint is removed at your 7–10 day review. Bruising is fading and most patients can return to office-based work. Avoid exercise, glasses, and direct sun.
Weeks 3 – 4
Bruising resolved, shape emerging
Bruising has cleared for most patients. Significant swelling has reduced and the new shape of your nose is clearly visible for the first time.
Months 3 – 6
Back to all activities
Exercise, contact sport (with caution), and glasses are permitted again. The nose continues to refine and settle as the last of the swelling resolves.
12 months
Final result
All residual swelling has gone and your final result is fully visible. Rhinoplasty results are generally long-lasting — the structural changes do not reverse.

Informed consent
Risks and considerations
Rhinoplasty is a safe procedure when performed by a qualified specialist plastic surgeon. As with any surgery, understanding potential risks is an important part of your decision.
Swelling and bruising
Expected and temporary. Most bruising resolves within 3–4 weeks; residual swelling may persist for up to 12 months as the final result emerges.
Asymmetry
Minor asymmetries during healing are common and usually resolve as swelling settles. Significant persistent asymmetry is uncommon.
Temporary breathing changes
Nasal congestion is normal post-operatively. Breathing typically improves significantly once swelling fully resolves over the following months.
Infection
Rare. Prophylactic antibiotics are given at the time of surgery, and the team monitors carefully at all follow-up appointments.
Revision surgery
A small percentage of patients (5–10%) may wish for minor refinements after the full result has settled — no earlier than 12 months after surgery.
Anaesthesia risks
All general anaesthesia carries a small baseline risk, which is minimised by your pre-operative assessment and the involvement of an accredited anaesthetist.
