Step by step
The procedure

Consultation and implant selection
Your surgeon assesses your breast anatomy, skin, and chest dimensions. Implant sizers help you visualise different sizes. A personalised implant recommendation is made and the surgical plan finalised.

Pre-operative preparation
Stop blood-thinning medications 2 weeks prior. Fast from midnight the night before. Arrange a driver home and a support person for the first night.

General anaesthesia
Breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia as a day procedure. Surgery takes approximately 1–2 hours.

Incision and implant placement
An incision is made in the chosen location — most commonly in the breast crease (inframammary fold). A pocket is created and the implant placed precisely in the planned position.

Closure and dressing
Incisions are closed with layered sutures. A supportive surgical bra is fitted before you leave theatre. Most patients go home the same day.

Follow-up care
Review appointments at 1 week, 4–6 weeks, and 3 months. Breast implants require long-term monitoring — your surgeon provides guidance on this at consultation.
Recovery
What to expect after surgery
Days 1 – 3
Rest and limited arm movement
Tightness, soreness, and swelling are normal. Rest at home. Avoid raising arms above shoulder height. Wear your surgical bra continuously.
Week 1 – 2
Wound review and return to light work
Sutures and dressings reviewed. Most patients return to desk work by day 7–10. Driving is permitted once you can perform an emergency stop comfortably.
Weeks 3 – 6
Increasing activity
Light lower body exercise resumes. Upper body and chest exercise restricted until cleared at 6 weeks. Implants begin to settle into a more natural position.
3 – 6 months
Final result
Implants have fully settled. Swelling resolved. Scars are fading. The final shape and position is now established.

Informed consent
Risks and considerations
Capsular contracture
Scar tissue forming around the implant can harden and distort the breast shape. This is the most common longer-term complication. Submuscular placement and textured/motiva implants reduce this risk.
Implant rippling
Visible or palpable rippling is more common in slim patients with little natural breast tissue. Submuscular placement and cohesive gel implants minimise this risk.
Changes in nipple sensation
Temporary changes in breast and nipple sensation are common. Permanent changes are uncommon. Your surgeon will discuss this at consultation.
Implant longevity
Modern implants are long-lasting but not guaranteed for life. Regular monitoring is recommended. Replacement may be needed in future decades.
BIA-ALCL awareness
Breast Implant-Associated ALCL is a rare lymphoma associated primarily with certain textured implants. Your surgeon will discuss current implant safety data and TGA-approved options at consultation.
Breastfeeding
