Breast Reduction

BREAST REDUCTION IS A SURGICAL PROCEDURE THAT REDUCES THE SIZE OF OVERLY LARGE BREASTS

Breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty, is a common procedure as women recognise that having large breasts can be detrimental to their health, confidence and self-esteem.

The vast majority of women who present for Breast Reduction surgery do so because of pain. It is well documented that large breasts cause neck, upper back and shoulder pain, as well as pain between the shoulder blades. Bra straps dig into the shoulders leaving deep grooves.

Rashes under the breasts (intertrigo) and difficulty finding clothing that fits properly adds to the feeling of discomfort. Many young women with large breasts feel very self-conscious and find it difficult to lead active lives.

Breast Reduction or Reduction Mammaplasty has been to shown to alleviate the pain and discomfort caused by large breasts. In fact many women report feeling dramatically more comfortable within days of having the surgery and report a higher level of confidence.

Modern techniques of breast reduction mean that the nipple does not need to be cut off the breast in order to make the breast smaller. Rather the nipple is left attached but it is raised to higher position while the breast is made more proportional. This preserves the sensation to the nipple and improves the chances of it functioning normally after surgery.

This includes preserving the ability to breast feed. During this procedure the breasts are lifted as well as made smaller.

The surgeons at Coastal Plastic Surgery believe that there is not just one breast reduction technique for every patient. They are well versed in a number of surgical techniques, including short scar procedures where less skin is removed. The aim is to create natural, beautiful and comfortable breasts.

Not everyone wants to be the same size; which is why we will take the time to discuss with you the size you would like to be. We find that breast reduction patients are amongst the happiest in our practice.

During your consultation, the surgeon will discuss how the surgery is performed and what the possible risks of surgery are, and how these would be managed; this allows you to make an informed decision. A second consultation is done closer to the surgery date, to ensure the right choices have been made for your unique needs and desires.

Breast reduction fees are partially rebateable from Medicare and your health insurance.

No decision to have surgery should be taken lightly, and our surgeons will be more than happy to answer the many questions you may have, and to help you decide whether breast reduction is right for you.
