Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Reduction)

ONE OF THE MOST COMPLEX AND DIFFICULT OF SURGERIES TO BE PERFORMED CORRECTLY

The area around the eyes is one of the first to show the signs of ageing and tiredness. Droopy eyelids and bags under the eyes can make us look tired even when we are not.

As we age and due to the effects of muscle activity, the forehead drops and the outer eyebrows descend causing a fold to develop over the corner of the upper eyelid. At the same time the skin of the upper eyelid becomes thin and excessive and there is a loss of the normal eyelid crease definition. In the lower eyelid, bags form and the skin becomes loose and wrinkling. The lower eyelid becomes longer and develops “tear troughs” making the bags appear larger.

Unfortunately no single procedure can address all of these changes. Rather a careful assessment must be made of your individual situation, with particular importance placed upon the features which bother you most.

Outer upper eyelid heaviness or lateral brow ptosis can only be corrected by Browlift surgery.

One of the most commonly performed procedures in Plastic Surgery is eyelid reduction or Blepharoplasty. Yet it is one of the most complex and difficult of surgeries to be performed correctly.

For the upper eyelid, a progressive hooding of the skin combined with loss of the eyelid crease and bulging of fat bags can produce heaviness of the eyelids. These can be symptomatic. In some cases, with marked skin droop, your vision can be obscured.

A precisely performed upper eyelid correction (upper blepharoplasty) removes excess skin and fat and creates a crisper, more defined upper eyelid. The scar falls imperceptibly into the crease.

This procedure is routinely performed in our rooms under local anaesthetic or alternatively can be performed in hospital as day surgery.

For the lower eyelid, thinning of the tissues that support the lid can produce bulging of lower lid fat and excess skin making you look perpetually tired.

A lower eyelid correction (lower blepharoplasty) is performed mainly to correct the bags that form below the eye. In the past this fat was discarded, but modern techniques transplant this fat under the lower lid troughs and depressions. The effect of moving this fat from bulging areas into areas of hollowing is to give a smoother contour between the lower lid and the cheek; thus making the eyelid appear shorter and more youthful.

If the lower eyelid skin is loose and excessive then it is accurately trimmed and tightened (open blepharoplasty) leaving a fine scar just below the eyelashes. If the skin is not loose, then the procedure can be performed transconjunctivally leaving no external scar. Lower blepharoplasty is performed in hospital as day surgery.

Blepharoplasty is often combined with browlift. Pain is easily managed with oral medications, but you will require 2 to 3 weeks for bruising and swelling to subside.

Some of the benefits of blepharoplasty surgery include:

  • Eyelid surgery may have various functional benefits that include more comfortable eyes and improved vision;
  • More rejuvenated and less tired appearance;
  • May improve confidence and self esteem.
